Reiki is a spiritual practice and many of my Reiki clients are spiritual people. They might be healers themselves, yogis, or simply interested in spirituality. But just as equally, many of my clients are non-spiritual people. They are simply trying Reiki to help them with their anxiety, feelings of being stuck, emotional stress, or physical pain. Reiki is a spiritual practice, but you don’t have to be spiritual to do Reiki.
Reiki is a spiritual practice
When you decide to try Reiki, it doesn’t mean you have to be spiritual. It doesn’t mean that Reiki will turn you into a hippie! But it does mean that perhaps when you experience Reiki, you might also experience what it’s like to be more connected to your Higher Self.
Your Higher Self is your true essence. Your Higher Self in a spiritual sense is your Soul consciousness that is so much more than your physical body. It is the highest aspect of you that is all knowing. Your Soul’s consciousness (or Higher Self) is the part of you that is loving, kind, abundant, joyful and grateful. It sends you messages through intuition and gut instinct. Your Higher Self is love; the opposite of Ego which is fear.
The Ego
The Ego (sometimes called the Chatterbox) is the part of you where fear comes from. The Ego’s role is to keep you safe and protected, but it can also be the source of negative thoughts and energy. The Chatterbox needs constant attention; it’s like a child that hasn’t learnt how to share or to give. It simply wants to take. Your Chatterbox is the part of you that says you’re not good enough, smart enough, tall enough, skinny enough, just not enough. As with the Higher Self, your Ego will always be there. Neither is right or wrong, each simply gives you a different experience of life.
Ego or Higher Self?
When we decide to live from Ego, our life’s experience is be based in fear. If we decide to live from our Higher Self, our life’s experience will stem from love. Our Conscious Mind listens to both our Higher Self and Ego. We then can decide which source of information and energy we want, and send this to our Subconscious Mind. Our Subconscious Mind is always listening to our Conscious Mind and will believe anything we tell it, whether or not it is true or even if we believe it or not.
Subconscious mind is always listening
When the Subconscious Mind receives orders from our Conscious Mind, it seeks to carry them out by connecting to our body, our intellect and our emotions. For example, if we decide to listen to our Higher Self and think ‘I am confident and strong’, our Subconscious Mind will send messages to our body and make us physically strong. We will stand taller, and start to walk and talk with more confidence. However if our Conscious Mind listens to our Ego and thinks ‘I am weak and a loser’, our Subconscious Mind make us physically weaker. We will start to walk more slowly, our posture will slump, and we will feel like a loser.
Reiki is a spiritual practice
So how can Reiki help? Reiki can help us feel more connected to our Higher Self. My not-so-spiritual Reiki clients tell me that after Reiki, they feel lighter, more calm, and even happier. They feel less dragged down by heavy energy, less anxious, less depressed and more able to cope with life. Events that would previously trigger them in a big way don’t seem to trigger them so much anymore.
This is a result of feeling more connected to their Higher Self. Even if the spiritual element of Reiki isn’t something they resonate with, the physical, emotional and mental results can be felt and experienced.
