Self care is key, but is often something that we tend to forego when things get busy, stressful, or we feel overwhelmed. So here is your self care check in! Perhaps now is a good time to take a moment to reflect on how you’re feeling, and where your energy is at.
Self care is key across all aspects of being
Self care really means taking care of all aspects of your Self, including physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It can be very easy to focus on just one aspect, but forget about the other aspects. It could be tempting to focus on exercising and eating nourishing food for example. However, if you’re not also paying attention to your emotional and energetic needs, no matter how much exercise you do, you still might not feel balanced or in harmony with your inner Self.
Regular check in
Self care is key, so try checking in with yourself on a regular basis. Each morning, I sit down with my journal and write the question: ‘Casey, how are you feeling today’? I then write down my answer as a number between 0-10 (0=terrible, 10=amazing). This question refocuses my mind internally on myself, and gives me an opportunity to check in with how I’m really feeling in that moment. Once I write down my number, I then ask myself, what would it take to lift me 1-2 points higher. I then have time to reflect and think about what I really need to nourish my whole being.
In order to nourish and take care of your physical being, it could mean moving your body, eating nourishing food, drinking plenty of water, and getting enough sleep. It might mean not just exercising but also having rest days to allow your body to recover. For me, I like to go boxing, personal training, walking and running, and of course yoga! I eat well, drink lots of water, and am usually in bed early around 9.30am, so I can get up at 5am. However this won’t work for everyone, so find what feels good for you.
Nourishing your mind is just as important as taking care of your physical body! Maybe that means seeing a therapist, psychologist, or coach to open your mind, and clear any limiting beliefs you might have. Maybe it’s meditating to help refocus your mind. Or perhaps it’s simply setting an intention or journaling each morning so you can move through your day with clarity.
Our emotional needs are vital to our health and wellbeing. This could be connecting with your family in a meaningful way. It could be socializing with friends, giving someone a hug, or telling someone you love them. If you’re feeling down, it might mean talking to someone about how you’re feeling, and sharing your emotions with someone where you can feel safe and heard.
Spiritual / Energetic
This is one that often gets missed! However, everything is energy, and if are not vibrating at a high state, then the effect will be felt across all other aspects of your being. In order to take care of your energy, it might be taking Epsom salt baths, using sage or palo santos, or meditating on a regular basis. It could be doing breathwork, visualisation, or getting regular Reiki treatments or energy healings. Once you start prioritizing and taking care of your energy, you will find that your whole being will become more balanced. Your mind will become clearer, you will feel better within yourself, and you will have more energy to take care of the physical aspects of yourself too.
