Spiritual Entanglement
Spiritual entanglement can be confusing, scary, and very difficult to free yourself from.
The good news is, you CAN absolutely break free from it! It will just take a bit of elbow grease, and deep diving into your mind and energy. Spiritual entanglement affects all aspects of your being. Your mind, emotions and energy can all be strongly affected, which then impacts on your physical body too. Knowing what spiritual entanglement is, what to do about it, and how to protect your energy, are keys to maintaining energetic sovereignty.
What is spiritual entanglement?
Spiritual entanglement is where two people’s energies are so deeply intertwined, that they are energetically bound together. If you can imagine a DNA spiral, that can give you a visual imagery of what it’s like to have two people’s energies wrapping around each other. In psychological terms, this is called ‘enmeshment’. When two people are enmeshed, boundaries are severely blurred, and there is a loss of autonomous identity, decisions, needs and desires. In spiritual enmeshment, it’s the same thing energetically. Two people’s energies are bound together, so that each person can feel (and feed off) the other person’s energy, emotions and thoughts.
Enmeshment depletes your energy
As you can imagine, this can lead to massively depleting your energy. It can also lead to potentially picking up on all sorts of negative entities, energies, thoughts and emotions from the other person. Negative energies and thoughts can bounce between the two people, and it can be very difficult to clear them. This makes for a negative loop or cycle of draining each other’s energy. It’s also very tricky to discern what is yours, and what is the other persons feelings, thoughts and energy.
How does spiritual entanglement occur?
Spiritual entanglement can happen mainly in two ways. The first is through enmeshment or co-dependency. Enmeshment is usually learned as a coping mechanism from our parents (which they most likely learned from their parents, and the pattern goes on). If we learnt to be enmeshed as a child, then this pattern becomes our blueprint. We often then enmesh with our children, our romantic partners, and even friendships too. Enmeshment sets the stage for energetic entanglement too.
Transference
The second is through transference. Transference is when someone directs their thoughts, emotions, and energy onto someone else. This can happen in families, partners or friends (becoming essentially enmeshment), but it can also happen in counselling, therapy, and even Reiki healing sessions. A client may transfer their feelings, thoughts or energy onto the therapist. Especially in Reiki healing or spiritual healing treatments, if the Reiki healer is not careful, spiritual entanglement can occur. This is why cutting off from clients and patients, having strong boundaries and clear communication around expectations of the session are vitally important.
Why does entanglement happen?
Usually entanglement or enmeshment happens because there is an emotional connection, or an unmet need that is being met through the relationship. For example, if one party has a deep need for attachment, and projects this need onto the other party, and the other party has a deep need to be needed, enmeshment can more easily occur. Usually this is a case in trauma bonding or where two people are projecting their unmet needs, subconscious wounds or learned coping behaviours onto the other person.
In transference, if one party is an open channel for energy or is holding space for the other party (ie a Reiki healer or therapist), and the client is redirecting their thoughts, feelings and energy onto the therapist or healer because they feel safe, if the space holder does not properly close off the energy and maintain strong boundaries, this channel can remain unknowingly open, and over time, entanglement can occur.
How to recognise if you are spiritually entangled
If you are noticing that you’re thinking about someone all the time to the point of it interfering with your daily life, you could be spiritually entangled. You might be able to sense their energy very strongly, or you might not feel like yourself. If you notice you are feeling out of sorts, or abnormally emotional when around a particular person, or ‘hooked in’ to their energy, this is a big sign of entanglement. If you are someone who knows they have co-dependency tendencies, addictive tendencies, hyper fixation or learned enmeshment with one or both parents, it is especially important to be aware of possible enmeshment traps and spiritual entanglement too.
Alive or dead
We can even have spiritual entanglement to people who have passed. If you feel like you cannot stop grieving someone who has passed, or you just can’t stop thinking about them, this could also be a sign of spiritual entanglement. Cutting cords is a step in the right direction, but often if you are entangled, it can be very hard to even imagine cutting cords, as it might feel like you are losing them forever. Know that this is not the case! Cutting cords does not mean you cannot ever connect to that person. You can absolutely still connect and talk to someone who has passed, without being energetically tied together.
Entanglement drains your energy
When there is energetic entanglement, one persons energy is constantly leaking into the other persons energy field, and vice versa. Cutting cords or reattaching cords to an appropriate source (like Source/Universal energy) is vital, but so is dealing with the underlying subconscious beliefs, fears, childhood wounds and previous traumas that have caused entanglement to exist in the first place. Learning to communicate and be clear around your expectations of what is appropriate is also important, as is protecting your energy and strengthening your energy field. Learning to say no, cut off your energy, and being ok with letting people down (eg healing old people pleasing tendencies) is also extremely helpful in learning to stand in your own energetic sovereignty. As a therapist or healer, it is also important to be very clear on the boundaries of a professional session, and not encourage dependency on the therapist/healer.
Energetic sovereignty
The most important thing to remember, is that you always have the power over your own energy! Your energy is the most sacred part of you. We always want to maintain energetic sovereignty. This means that our energy is not influenced or hooked into anyone else’s energy. We want to be able to be in control of our own energy (and no-one else’s). Spiritual entanglement is not good for either party. In order to maintain sovereignty, we must not only cut energetic cords, but also untangle ourselves. We must learn what part of us allowed that other person to entangle with us, and heal that blueprint once and for all. And then, we must learn how to protect our energy!
Want to learn more?
If this resonates and perhaps you feel like you might be spiritually entangled with someone, book in for a Reiki & Energy Alchemy session here. Untangling yourself will require not only energy work, but also a big mindset shift. It will require understanding yourself and your ancestry patterns on a deeper level. Remember, some of the underlying patterns may have been inherited through generational or ancestral trauma, patterns and behaviours too, and may not have even started with you!
If you’d like to learn more about Reiki and energy, I would recommend doing a Reiki Course! Reiki Level 1 is the best place to start, and you can read more here. If you’d like to understand how to protect your energy, I also have an online Protect Your Energy course, including online modules, a guided meditation and a distant Reiki healing to help you cut cords, clear your energy and strengthen your energy field.
