‘What would my Higher Self say?’ is a great question to ask yourself any time you find yourself in a challenging moment. Let’s face it, we’re human after all, and we all go through challenging times! Life is not linear, and when we are faced with a tough decision, or something that isn’t going the way we hoped or wanted, a range of emotions can bubble to the surface. It’s easy for our mind to take over, and over-analyse, overthink, worry and stress about what to do. However, if we can step back and ask ourselves, ‘what would my Higher Self say in this moment’ it can shift us out of stress-mode, and into a more calm and grounded mindset, allowing us to see and think more clearly.
The inner critic
We often hear people talking about the ‘inner-critic’ or ‘inner-bitch’ (a term I strongly dislike!). Our inner critic is otherwise known as our Ego, or even our shadow side. It’s an important part of our mind that no matter how hard we try, we can never get rid of. It’s part of what makes us human, and it’s job is to keep us safe. However, even though our Ego is trying to protect us, it comes directly from fear. This is the part of our mind that likes to over-analyse, judge, focus on problems, and criticise both ourselves and others.
Fear gets in the way
Fear-based thinking can get in the way of our growth, expansion, and positive self esteem. It also gives rise to negative emotions such as anger, sadness, shame, resentment, jealousy, anxiety, and more. These emotions are not bad (simply impulses of energy), however if we get stuck in them for too long, they can drain our vital life force and have a destructive impact on our mind and body.
Naming your inner critic
There is a lot of talk around naming your inner critic, and becoming aware of it anytime it rears its head. For example, you might name your inner critic ‘Boogie Monster’. Anytime you notice yourself thinking negatively or judging yourself or others, it can help to recognise that this is Boogie Monster talking! Shining light on your inner critic can flush it out of the darkness and bring awareness to it, allowing you to shift gears if need be. This strategy definitely has its place and can help for sure. However, another strategy that could help is to ask yourself ‘what would your Higher Self say?’
Ego vs Higher Self
The flip side of your Ego is your Higher Self. Your Higher Self is the part of you that is all-knowing, and connected to the Divine, your intuition, and the greater Universe. Your Higher Self has a super high vibration (unlike your Ego which is low vibration), and comes directly from love. Another way to ask this question could be ‘what is the most loving thing I can do right now?’, or ‘what would love do in this moment?’. These questions have the power to shift your energy out of fear, frustration, anger, confusion, and overwhelm, into a more calm, relaxed, kind, generous, and loving state of mind.
What would my Higher Self say?
Whenever we get stressed or find ourselves in a challenging situation, whether that be at work, in a relationship, or any other situation, your Ego kicks into gear to try and protect you. It naturally puts you into a scarcity mindset, which is limiting and restrictive. But if we can ask another question, ‘what would my Higher Self say’, it shifts our vibration into abundance, opening up possibilities we might not have seen otherwise.
Energy flows where your attention goes
The same strategy for bringing awareness to your Ego or inner critic by naming it, can also be applied to your Higher Self. We know that our energy flows where our attention goes. If we can put our attention on our Higher Self, more energy will flow into that abundant, high vibrational state, and will not only put your body and mind at ease, it can help you to stay in a state of loving kindness too.
Naming your Higher Self
So how exactly does this work? Just as you might name your inner critic, you might also like to name your Higher Self. This gives your Higher Self more attention, more power, more focus and more energy. For example your inner critic/Ego might be ‘Boogie Monster’, but your Higher Self might be ‘Universal Love’ or ‘Marcus Aurelius’ or something else meaningful to you. Feel free to be playful when picking your names!
Give it a go and notice what happens
Next time you’re in a challenging situation, ask yourself ‘what would my Higher Self say’, or ‘what would Marcus/Universal Love say’? Instead of spiralling down into negative self talk, confusion, frustration or anger, allow your Higher Self to lift your energy up, and open your mind to the abundance of possibilities. Perhaps an idea that you might not have even considered may drop in!
