Let’s Talk About Loneliness

Let’s talk about loneliness

Loneliness is not easy to talk about, and is often misunderstood. With the rise of social media and technology, it seems like loneliness is becoming more and more common. Loneliness isn’t dependent on how many friends or social connections we have. Rather, it is a feeling we have when we don’t have enough meaningful connections, and are not feeling understood and supported.

My own feelings of loneliness

For me personally, there are definitely times where I’ve felt lonely and isolated. As a Reiki healer, I’ve often felt my work is not understood by my wider family and friends. There is sometimes judgement, dismissal, or even fear from them. I also live on my own and work from home, so it can feel isolating at times. I love what I do, but there are moments where running my own business can feel overwhelming, confusing, and exhausting. In those times, I might notice myself getting more easily annoyed or angry, but these emotions are often a cover up for deeper feelings of loneliness and needing support.

Loneliness and mental health

Loneliness can lead to emotions such as anxiety, overwhelm, frustration, sadness and worry. If left unchecked, it can also bring about depression, worsening states of anxiety, or even paranoia. When isolated, loneliness can feel exhausting, mentally and emotionally draining, and can deeply affect our quality of life.

Alone vs Loneliness

Being alone is not the same as loneliness. We can be surrounded by people, even friends and family, and still feel lonely. Loneliness is more about the quality of connections, having deeper bonds and feelings of being understood and seen. These things are vital human needs. No person is an island; we all need support, connection, love and validation at times.

Big life changes affect loneliness

Loneliness can affect anyone. We can all feel lonely from time to time. However, there are moments in life that can more deeply affect our mental health and bring about feelings of loneliness. Big life changes such as relationship break-ups, the death of a loved one, moving to a new city or country, or simply a change in circumstance can all bring about loneliness. If you live and/or work alone and don’t have a close support network, this can also increase risk of loneliness too. Sometimes, we might just feel like we don’t fit in, like an outsider. I’ve found personally this to be the case often with spirituality and Reiki.

The ‘witch wound’

Reiki and spirituality is becoming slowly more mainstream and accepted in the general public. However, for a very long time it was feared, judged, and dismissed. So many healers have leftover ‘witch wounds’ from the times where we were burnt at the stake, drowned in rivers, and tortured to death. Even now, natural medicine and spirituality still has a long way to go. Many people still judge these modalities, are highly skeptical, or just don’t believe in it. It’s important for us as healers, and people who do believe in spirituality, to find other people who are like-minded. Having a community of people to share knowledge and wisdom, share stories and crazy experiences, and ask questions is vital to our mental, emotional and spiritual health.

Our Reiki community

This is the biggest reason I created the Reiki Healers Community Circle. For those who have done a Reiki Course, it can be challenging to find other Reiki healers to talk to, practice Reiki on, and simply just be in the presence of other like-minded people. Your other ‘regular’ friends may not believe in Reiki or understand it. This is a place where you can feel safe, be seen, and support others with challenges they also might be facing. As practitioners of energy healing, you know that you will always meet the right people at the right time. We are all mirroring each other, and there will be gold nuggets of learnings in every Circle you choose to attend.

Join our Reiki Healer Community Circle

If you’d like to come to the next Reiki Healer Community Circle, it’s coming up on Sunday 16th February, 9-11am (book here). I will be providing tea and nibbles, and there will be plenty of time for discussion, questions, and sharing stories. There will also be a Reiki swap where you can practice Reiki and receive Reiki! I will also guide you through a meditation, and hold space if you need extra support.
