Listen to your body
As a highly sensitive empath, I’ve learned that my sensitivity doesn’t just apply to emotions — it extends to everything. My physical body is just as sensitive as my energetic and emotional body. If you’re an empath or a sensitive person, you probably get it! We carry and store so much in our bodies — past trauma, emotions, stress, anxiety, grief — all of it lives within us, whether we’re aware of it or not.
Thinking through problems?
Our body, mind, emotions, and spirit are all made of energy. They are intricately connected and constantly communicating with one another. But most of us have been taught to ignore that subtle inner dialogue. Instead of tuning into our body’s wisdom, we’re trained to think through problems. We’ve been conditioned to prioritize logic and rationality over intuition and body-based knowing.
Ask your body why?
However, your body is always speaking to you. Take something as simple as a headache. Usually our first instinct is to grab a Panadol. But what if instead we asked: Why do I have a headache? Is it stress? Am I overwhelmed? Am I holding tension in my jaw from anxious thoughts? Is someone in my life “being a headache”?
Get rid of pain, immediately!
Every emotion, thought, and experience impacts our physical body — often in ways we don’t realize. Pain is uncomfortable, exhausting, confusing, and yep — painful! So of course we want to push it down, ignore it, numb it, or treat it with a quick fix. And while medication can absolutely be helpful, we also need to ask a deeper question: What is my body trying to tell me?
Pain is the messenger
Let’s not forget — pain is not the problem, pain is the messenger. Different areas of the body often correspond with different emotional themes. For example:
- The heart is connected to love, joy, connection, and gratitude. If you’re experiencing tightness, pain, or issues in your chest, it might be linked to loneliness, grief, heartbreak, or emotional disconnection.
- The gut relates to stress, boundaries, intuition, and change. Gut issues might point to burnout, anxiety, or resisting a transformation life is trying to bring you through.
My personal pain journey
I’ve personally experienced a lot of physical pain over the course of my life — chronic constipation as a child, ongoing gut issues, mystery pains that seemed to move around without a clear reason. I used to feel so confused. Now, with deeper understanding, I recognize that my sensitivity means I absorb energy very easily. As a child, I was unknowingly carrying the unspoken stress and anxiety of the people around me.
Heightened sensitivities
Looking back on past relationships, I can see a clear pattern — I often became physically unwell while in relationships, only to improve once they ended. That’s not to say the relationship was the only cause, but it was a significant energetic factor. The people we surround ourselves with have a profound impact on our energy and wellbeing — especially if you’re highly sensitive.
Discernment is key
Today, I have a much deeper relationship with my body and my intuition. I know how to discern what’s mine and what’s not mine. I have energetic tools that allow me to clear what I’ve picked up. My intuition has become one of my greatest superpowers — but it takes skill, practice, and boundaries to use it well.
Transmuting emotions through my body
As a Reiki healer, I often physically feel what my clients are experiencing in their bodies. I might feel a twinge, a heaviness, or an ache that mirrors their pain. The same goes for emotions. One of the most profound sessions I’ve had was with an elderly man whose wife of over 50 years had just passed. His daughter had booked him in because he hadn’t cried once. When he sat down in front of me, I started sobbing uncontrollably. He hadn’t been able to express his grief, so my body transmuted it for him. He walked out feeling lighter, and I — knowing it wasn’t my emotion — was able to clear myself easily.
But I didn’t always know how to do that.
Learning to listen to your body
In the past, I took on everyone’s emotions and pain and assumed it was mine. I didn’t know how to tell the difference. That was before I knew how to protect or clear my energy. I was constantly sick, drained, and overwhelmed. Now, I’ve learned the language of my body. I listen, ask questions, and get curious. And most importantly, I don’t dismiss what my body is trying to tell me.
Your body is wise
If you’re a sensitive soul who struggles with chronic tension, fatigue, pain, or mystery symptoms, I want you to know: you’re not broken, and you’re not making it up. Your body is wise, intuitive, and constantly communicating with you.
The next time something feels “off,” pause. Take a breath and tune into your body. Ask yourself, what is my body trying to tell me? You might be surprised at what you hear.
