What Really Happens When You Learn Reiki
What really happens when you learn Reiki? It’s a question I’m asked often, usually followed closely by: “But I don’t want to become a Reiki healer… is Reiki Level 1 still for me?”
The answer is absolutely yes.
Learning Reiki doesn’t mean you have to start a business, see clients or completely change your career. For many people, Reiki Level 1 has nothing to do with becoming a professional healer.
It’s about learning something you can use for yourself.
Reiki Is For You First
This was one of the things I loved most when I first learned Reiki. After years of receiving different types of energy healing, suddenly I wasn’t completely reliant on someone else to give it to me.
I could practise Reiki at home. I could put my own hands on my body. And I could work with my own energy.
Reiki became something I could return to again and again.
Receiving Reiki and Learning Reiki Are Very Different
Having a Reiki healing is a beautiful experience.
You lie down. Someone else holds the space. You receive Reiki energy. You might feel deeply relaxed, emotional, peaceful, energised, or simply very still.
But when you learn Reiki, your relationship with it changes.
Reiki suddenly becomes a practice you can incorporate into your everyday life.
You learn the foundations of Reiki healing and energy work. You learn how to practise Reiki on yourself and others. You begin understanding the chakra system, the energy field and how energy moves through the body.
And importantly, you receive your own Reiki attunement.
An attunement is an energetic process passed from Reiki Master to student that connects you to the Reiki energy and enables you to begin working with it yourself.
That’s the moment many students have been waiting for.
You Don’t Need to Be Psychic
This is another thing people worry about.
“What if I can’t feel anything?”
“What if everyone else can see energy and I can’t?”
“What if I’m not intuitive enough?”
Please don’t worry! You don’t need to see auras, and you don’t need to communicate with spirits if you don’t want to. You don’t need to know what someone’s chakras are doing just by looking at them.
And you definitely don’t need to arrive at Reiki Level 1 already knowing how to work with energy.
That’s why you’re there.
Some students feel Reiki strongly from the beginning. They notice heat, tingling, pulsing or sensations in their hands. Others experience it much more subtly.
Neither experience makes someone “better” at Reiki. Like anything else, your awareness develops through practice.
The Most Important Person You’ll Practise Reiki On Is You
I think this part of Reiki Level 1 gets underestimated.
People are often excited about being able to practise Reiki on their partner, their children, their friends, their pets…
But one of the first people you’re learning to support is yourself.
Self-Reiki has been one of the most valuable practices I’ve carried with me throughout my own healing journey.
I’ve used it when I’ve been stressed. When I’ve been sick. When I’ve been heartbroken.
Reiki is paramount when I’ve been overwhelmed, during my kundalini awakening, and other massive periods of change.
And sometimes just because I’ve had a really long day and need to lie down, put my hands on myself and reconnect.
You don’t have to wait until something is wrong to practise Reiki. It can simply become part of how you care for yourself.
You Start Understanding Energy Differently
Something else often begins happening once you learn Reiki: you start paying more attention.
You may realise you’ve always been able to feel the atmosphere when you walk into a room. You notice how different people affect your energy, and become more conscious of your own emotional state.
With Reiki, you might begin recognising faster when you’re depleted, overwhelmed or carrying something that doesn’t feel like you.
Now, you have the skills to really tune in and notice something that has always been there.
Energy.
Everything we experience has an energetic component – our emotions, thoughts, relationships, environments and physical bodies all interact.
Learning Reiki gives you a framework for beginning to understand that world. Especially for highly sensitive or intuitive people in particular, that can sometimes feel like finally being given a language for something they’ve been experiencing their whole lives.
Reiki Level 1 Is the Beginning, Not the Destination
Sometimes people hesitate to learn Reiki because they think they need to know where it’s going to lead. You really don’t.
Some of my students complete Reiki Level 1 purely for themselves, others to practice on family and friends. Some eventually continue to Reiki Level 2, and yes, some do become professional Reiki healers.
Others discover Reiki is the beginning of a much bigger spiritual journey.
And some simply walk away with a beautiful healing practice they can use for the rest of their lives.
There isn’t one correct Reiki journey. You get to discover what yours looks like.
Learning Reiki Puts the Practice in Your Own Hands
This is probably the biggest difference for me.
Receiving Reiki gave me access to a form of healing I loved. Learning Reiki gave me a practice I could carry with me for life. And all these years later, despite everything else I’ve learned about psychology, mindset, spirituality, energy healing and personal development, Reiki is still the practice I return to again and again.
It’s simple. It’s gentle. And it’s always there when I need.
And once you’ve learned it, nobody can take that knowledge away from you.
Ready to Learn Reiki?
My next Reiki Level 1 course in Melbourne is 12–13 September 2026, and it’s designed for complete beginners who want to learn Reiki healing, energy work and self-Reiki in a supportive environment.
You don’t need any previous Reiki training. You don’t need to be psychic or highly spiritual. And you don’t need to have any intention of becoming a professional Reiki healer.
You can simply come because you want to learn.
Because ultimately, you don’t have to want to become a Reiki healer to learn how to support your own healing.
Book in here. I’d love to see you there!
