Why Self-Care Isn’t Working
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why self-care isn’t working, despite doing all the “right” things, you’re not alone.
However, if you’re anything like me, you probably raised an eyebrow. After all, I actually love self care.
I am the QUEEN of self-care!
I probably spend more time on self care than anyone I know. Every week I receive Reiki. I practice self-Reiki, meditate, journal, go to the gym, and do yoga. I take baths, spend time in nature, have osteo and naturopathy appointments, and get my eyebrows done.
I read books, do personal development, and honestly? I’d never give any of it up.
Because every single one of those things helps me reconnect with myself. They calm my mind, regulate my body, restore my energy and remind me to slow down.
So when I say “Why self-care isn’t working,” I don’t mean it doesn’t work at all.
I mean…it can’t do everything.
I Was Doing Everything “Right”
This has been one of the biggest lessons of my own healing journey.
Despite years of self-care, I still found myself burning out. I still overworked, still found it difficult to say no, and still put everyone else’s needs before my own.
But for years, my body has also been calling my bluff. It’s almost embarrassing how often my body has tried to teach me this lesson. Even my mum used to tell me, Casey, slow down!
But this year, my body had enough. After months of pushing through stress I hadn’t fully acknowledged, I developed one of the worst mouth infections I’ve ever experienced.
At first I couldn’t understand why. I look after my health, go to the dentist religiously, and take hygiene seriously. But once the obvious causes were ruled out, I couldn’t ignore what my body (and my dentist!) was telling me.
Stress.
Not just being busy. But years of deeply ingrained patterns that were quietly running underneath everything I did. That experience made me realise something I’d never fully appreciated before.
Self-care was helping me recover. But it wasn’t changing the beliefs that were creating the stress in the first place.
Self-Care Helps You Recover
But it doesn’t actually help you to change.
That was a huge shift for me. Meditation helped me feel calmer. Reiki helped clear my energy and reconnect me to myself. Yoga helped me feel grounded in my body. Journalling gave me clarity. All of those things were incredibly valuable.
But none of them automatically taught me how to stop people pleasing. They didn’t magically dissolve my fear of disappointing others.
They didn’t change the inherited beliefs I’d carried for years around achievement, worthiness and needing to constantly prove myself. Those patterns needed something different.
They needed deeper awareness, greater understanding, and a safe space where these beliefs could be unpacked with no judgement. They needed real tools I could use in moments of activation. And they needed gentle compassion and empathy throughout the process.
Where Psychology Meets Spirituality
I’ve always been interested in psychology, mindset and understanding human behaviour. I studied psychology at University, plus life coaching and NLP, and other mindset tools from many coaches and courses.
Psychology has helped me understand why I kept repeating certain behaviours. It helped me recognise my inner child, subconscious beliefs, shadow patterns, people pleasing tendencies, cultural conditioning and the stories I’d unknowingly been living from for decades.
But Reiki healing and energy work helped me shift something equally important. It helped me clear emotional energy that I’d been carrying for years. It helped me release other people’s energy that I’d absorbed without even realising it.
And it helped me strengthen my energy field, clear cords and attachments, work with ancestral healing, and reconnect with my own energy again.
For me, both have worked individually…to a certain extent. Neither approach was better than the other. They simply answered different questions. Psychology helped me understand my mind. Reiki helped me understand my energy.
But when I started merging them together…everything changed.
Healing Isn’t One-Dimensional
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that we’re incredibly complex human beings.
We’re physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and energetic, all at once. If we only focus on one layer, we often find ourselves circling back to the same patterns.
Psychology without energetics can overlook the fact that we’re constantly influencing—and being influenced by—the energy around us.
Spiritual healing without understanding the subconscious mind can leave us clearing the same emotional patterns over and over again without ever changing the beliefs underneath them.
For me, it was never Reiki or psychology. It was Reiki and psychology.
That’s where the deepest transformation happened.
Healing Is About Understanding Yourself
These days, I still meditate, practice self-Reiki and journal. I still go to the gym, and love all my little self-care rituals.
The difference is… I’m no longer relying on them to fix everything. Instead, I use them to support the deeper work, and to help me listen to my body.
To help me notice when old patterns are resurfacing, to ask better questions and to understand myself with more compassion instead of judgement.
Because in my experience, lasting healing doesn’t happen because we add more self-care to our calendar. It happens when we begin understanding ourselves on every level.
Ready To Go Deeper?
If you’ve been doing all the “right” things but still find yourself repeating the same patterns, please know this… There is absolutely nothing wrong with your self-care.
Perhaps you’ve simply reached the point where your healing is asking for another layer.
That’s exactly what my Reiki & Energy Alchemy sessions are designed for.
By bringing together Reiki healing, energy work, psychology, mindset coaching and deep emotional awareness, we gently explore not only what you’re feeling—but why those patterns keep showing up in the first place.
Because when we understand both the mind and the energy…
Healing stops feeling like something we have to chase. It becomes something we begin to embody.
