‘Let go and let God’ is another way of saying, let go of trying to control everything, and allow the Universe to do its thing! For anyone who is a control freak, suffers anxiety, or leans towards perfectionism, this is a wonderful reminder that we are not alone in creating our reality.
Control stems from fear
As humans, we often get caught up in trying to control the outcomes to particular situations. This need for control ultimately stems from an underlying fear. The underlying fear could come from many different things, often stemming from an event in childhood, or from the way you were raised in a particular family environment.
My own case of perfectionism
I definitely have a case of perfectionism myself! I grew up in a wonderful family, however both parents were quite strict in certain ways. My Dad is Malaysian-Chinese, and he grew up in typical Asian culture. As a result, I was always strongly encouraged to get good grades, go to University, and get that ‘piece of paper’ (degree)! I was rewarded with praise whenever I did well, and met with disappointment anytime I didn’t. As a result, I studied hard, went to University, and got a double degree with high distinction in both. Dad has my graduation picture framed on his bookcase.
Everyone has a story
Mum was also strict, but in a different way. She grew up in a family environment that wasn’t conducive to safety, stability or security. As a result, all she wanted to do was put down roots, and make sure we were safe and secure. I was grounded a lot as a teenager, and often had a strict curfew!
Finding balance
In saying that, both parents were also relaxed in the opposite way. Mum was a dancer and loved the arts, so was less focused on grades. Dad is very social and outgoing, and was always encouraging me to explore and experience different things. They balanced each other out well.
Fear of disappointing a parent
Perfectionism for me however, mainly came from a fear of disappointing my Dad, with whom I have a strong connection. Now he is definitely more relaxed…especially since I’m a professional Reiki healer (not a corporate HR manager!). It did take a lot of detaching from his opinion, and having the courage and strength to follow my own inner guidance. Luckily, he is a super Dad and unconditionally loves me, so he was fully supportive of my choices.
Let go and let God
‘Let go and let God’, is a great reminder for those of us who might struggle with detaching from the fears we developed at a younger age. Developing my spirituality and intuition has been key! We are always co-creating with the Universe, and the power is always in the present moment. However, if we live in the past, and are always worrying, anxious, or controlling everything, we miss the opportunity to create a different future.
Develop your spirituality and faith
The only thing we can control is ourselves – our thoughts and emotions. When I let go of worrying about other people’s opinions or getting it ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, and just allowed myself to be ME, it was freeing. Trying to control or please everyone around me is the opposite – it’s miserable, stressful, and anxiety-driven. If this resonates with you, I would encourage you to practice developing your spirituality and faith. Whether that be in the Universe, Jesus, God, Buddha, or any other higher power, it doesn’t matter. Have belief and faith that you are not alone in the world, and that you don’t have to do it all yourself. Trust in your greater power to help you, and you will be amazed at what the world delivers in return.
